We have spoilers for the June 2024 Shaker & Spoon box! The June 2024 theme is “The Rum-Believable Box”.

The big tent is up and the stage is set to house thirty days of thrills, four weeks of fantasy, a month of marvels! It’s imaginative. It’s incontrovertible. It’s The Rum-Believable Box!

Prepare as three unheard-of and personality-packed cocktails get ready to slide their way onto your doorstep, all pulsing with the satisfying summer-enhancing powers of aged rum. An amazing shade of amber from years spent maturing in oak, this particular style of spirit—like both its lighter and more heavily aged siblings—can often feature differences in method and offer flavor experiences that vary by country of origin or particular distillery.

But, either in beach blends or the meticulously crafted cocktails at the world’s best bars, the end result is the same record-breakingly rich, smooth, and slightly spiced sensation. After all, you can take the bottles out of the islands, but . . . you know the rest!

Get your tickets and grab your popcorn, because, golly, have we got a show for you! Aged rum’s got the character that basically begs for the boldest and brightest of big swings and, lucky for us, our mixologists—some of the mightiest the world over—are up to the task! Sign up for The Rum-Believable Box and drop your jaw at their flavor-balancing acts, aromatic acrobatics, and fearless feats of strength . . . of imagination!

Screenshot

Have we all gotten dizzy on the carousel and grabbed the wrong bottle? How else to explain this twisted mix that prolific cocktail writer and podcaster Greg Benson put together, pairing aged rum with Q Mixers Spicy Mango Margarita Mix?

Resolving these questions while defying all conventions, Go, Man, Go! shoots out of the gate, rounding out its tarted-up take on a rum punch with islandy and almondy falernum syrup and a fruity note of cherry bitters. Take all the time you need—there’s no long line between you and this cascading cavalcade of flavor!

Screenshot

Sother Teague will see you now, and his Doctor’s Orders are bringing many, many milligrams of bright flavor to the party. Forget the fire emojis—his cocktail of rum, lemon-lime, and smoked ginger-lemongrass syrup is finished with the real thing: a crowd-dazzling but not quite death-defying burst of flame, which envelops the pepped-up Penicillin-esque potion in a mist of caramelized orange oil.

You eat and drink with your eyes first, so it makes sense that Randeen Thomas has reached for a quiet culinary go-to whose purpose is to boost color and visual texture: browning sauce. From mom’s famous pot roast to the delectably darkened dishes of Jamaica, it ties simmering efforts together in a jiffy with richness and depth.

Much to our surprise, its cocktail game can be remarked upon similarly—it’s all gravy, baby! Especially in the tightly focused Brown Fashion, where it sets a perfectly seasoned stage for rum, cinnamon, clove, and vanilla.

We have spoilers for the May 2024 Shaker & Spoon box! The May 2024 theme is “Bourbon Legend Box”.

Fantastical fables and other bits of cock-and-bull chronicling: the historical records of spirits and of cocktails are littered with them! Too often the big innovations from behind the bar can all claim multiple creators, sometimes even thousands of miles or decades apart.

But you can keep your grains of salt reserved for glass-rimming, because to recount the public’s love affair with bourbon over the course of its two century–plus reign is one tale that’s not at all tall!

And the rest of bourbon’s road to prominence—from its easy adaptation into all of the cocktail booms past and present to the establishment of the Bourbon Trail as a bucket-list pilgrimage for devotees—has only solidified its status into what Lizzo might say is 100% that, ahem, icon.

The Bourbon Legend Box is getting ready to advance the story even further, and like a Sasquatch-spotting out in the wild, you won’t believe your senses! Our bartenders couldn’t have been more excited to capture a giant like this in cocktails, with top-notch concepts and the types of flavors that’ll make May—the month of a proper summer kick-off—the stuff of legend!

Together bourbon and aromatic bitters are one of the hottest head starts you can get on your way to achieving cocktail gold. But a foundational duo such as this should still hold on tight through the twists and turns of Tip Top Tam.

The Mother of Dragon’s Tail Sharon Yeung keeps the assertive punches of flavor coming in this bourbon crusher, which brings on the rosy bubbles of Q Mixers Hibiscus Ginger Beer and is taken all-out turbo with the tropical tartness of a tamarind-citrus cordial.

Let Bruce Shultz take us down, because we’re going to Strawberry Feels Forever. It’s a place where everything is real, including a fresh cracked black pepper–infused base on which strawberry syrup and balsamic vinegar can twist and shout themselves into a sweet and savory swirl.

Just imagine all the possibilities of flavor when bourbon grooves along with such delectable ingredients—especially with the (optional) frothy texture from an egg white or vegan alternatives. Soon enough, when your cocktails arrive, you won’t have to!

Temps are up and life’s a peach for the foreseeable future of cocktailing al fresco. With his gummy-garnished Backyard Old Fashioned, Benny Hurwitz presents a substantially stiffer take on a quenching and sweat-combatting glass of iced tea.

Honeyed peach tea syrup, peach-orange bitters, and bourbon all make mouthwatering magic together, a medley packed with juicy fruit flavor, subtle botanicals, and stick-to-your-rib-ness to spare.

We have spoilers for the March 2024 Shaker & Spoon box! The March 2024 theme is “Drink me, I’m Irish”.

You can’t read much about Irish whiskey without coming across the word “smooth.” This very apparent sense of evenness is a direct result of the triple distillation it undergoes, which has a dampening effect on the striking wood and grain interplay you’d experience from other styles.

But where it comes to cocktails—for one thing, feel free to exit the dark mahogany study and step into the fresh air. With its light disposition, Irish whiskey is the rare type that’s wide open to play with more delicate elements: floral, botanical, soft fruits, you name it.

In a world full of whisk(e)ys that assert their expressions to you, the Irish style asks the opposite; lean in and—without being walloped by flavor—casually take in the gentler essences that only such smoothness can offer.

It’s been a rainbow ride and back since we last focused on this spirit, but we’re ready to journey back to the pot of gold that is one of the fastest growing categories going! Read on to discover the tasty treasures buried in the crinkles of The Ballad of Irish Whiskey Boxand may your March be touched with a bit of Irish luck . . . and flavor!

What’s Robert Sickler ever to do with all these roses? Better invite one and all to his Gaelic Garden to sling some fine and floral Irish whiskey cocktails!

This quencher finds just the right fit with coconut water, lavender bitters, and a double touch of rose (both in a syrup and dried to infuse with sugar on the rim). We’ve left the gate open, so let yourself in and enjoy an unexpectedly light and ultra-leisurely look for whiskey!

Ana Patrizia Cabrera is a familiar face in the San Antonio bartending scene, has familial roots in Puerto Rico, and yet is daydreaming of a place somewhere in between with this cocktail: New Orleans. In her mind (and memories), hibiscus is the flower to unite all these culturally lush locations, just as it does with its red-hued fruitiness in Mardi Me Lucky.

Combined in a syrup with the Mexican cane sugar piloncillo, the flower parades on alongside cranberry-walnut bitters and, of course, Irish whiskey; all marching through the French Quarter toward a smoky surprise: a rocks glass you’ll upend to fill with mesquite smoke!

In jazz, you’ll never hear a group play a song the same way twice, and in cocktails, we’re blessed with formats like the old fashioned where that’s also true. Three components—spirit, sugar, bitters—and yet a multiverse of flavor possibilities to experiment with from there.

Christopher Frierson is just plain riffing right in the pocket with this New Jazz Old Fashioned, in which Irish whiskey finds a beautifully mellow mate in a jasmine + black tea syrup, along with the accenting percussive power of aromatic bitters and a lemon oil spritz!

We have spoilers for the February 2024 Shaker & Spoon box! The February 2024 theme is “Totally Tequila”.

There’s nothing niche about tequila today. Whatever reputations marked the spirit in the early days of its international debut have been well surpassed for the bright lights of the top shelf.

So what to do with our bottles of clear and pristine blanco next month? Why, walk away from the winter hunker (we’ll be ready—won’t you?) and throw a big party befitting such a now-capital-A A-lister!

Wouldn’t that just be, like, so, Totally Tequila?!

It’s to the credit of the growers, harvesters, and distillers on the ground—after centuries of legwork and standing on the shoulders of deep, longstanding Mexican tradition—that tequila has become a household name.

And while familiarity has only increased, its same peppery kick and lightness that can leap from the margarita to so much more has largely remained the same.

Consider this your invitation to a showcase of a truly great spirit—the Totally Tequila! Box—where you’ll find us all dressed to the nines and bopping around to the beats, with an equally energized cocktail always at the ready!

Off the top ropes, it’s Sam Jimenez in acrobatic fashion with this sprightly ode to a legendary luchador of lucha libre (professional wrestling, Mexican-style).

His Rayo de Jalisco delivers a real mask-off moment for the dependable tequila soda, revealing its inner capacity to complement all sorts of botanical complexities: the bold boom of blackberry soda and super lemon-lime juice in one corner and the fearless finesse of jasmine-oolong syrup and lime-coriander bitters in another. And the crowd goes wild as yet another tequila cocktail champion is crowned!

Flip the switch on the near-blinding welcome sign of luminescence known as Miami Sound Machine, which, thanks to our very own Caer Maiko, becomes a sip of sizzling salsa-dancing fuel right at the moment when tequila and lemon link up with our pink tropical syrup.

Enticing with the transportive tastes of guava, hibiscus, and grapefruit, this cocktail’s time is best spent sweating under the flashing lights with a special valentine (you!).

It’s the kitchen that never disappoints, the one you could’ve only experienced by Baking with Grandma. Amor y Amargo vet Lindsay Matteson would like to channel the essence of granny’s magic oven with this tequila old fashioned, which compensates for its lack of age in base spirit with the sentimental scents and flavors of warm spices, cherry bitters, and a shaving of dark chocolate on top.

We have spoilers for the December 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

For all the frantic rushes that the holiday season ushers in, it only serves to make quiet time with loved ones around the glow of the hearth that much more radiant. So gather ’round and hear the story unfold of an impending visit from three benevolent visions in glass—fizzy, stiff, and steamy—that will arrive upon the bell’s toll of December to teach you an all-important lesson: how to cross cocktail-menu planning right off your to-do list!

When surveying the slate of traditional classics to serve when feelings turn festive at year’s end (including those from the pages of drink-lover Dickens himself), rum is everywhere to be found.

So fear not these three messengers, for their tiding is a necessary one: throughout a long month of merriment and togetherness, the bounty of one’s home bar should know no bounds! Bells will be ringing, choirs will be singing, and you’ll soon be slinging plenty of creative takes on traditional favorites around the table with the Rum for the Holidays Box.

Caer Maiko’s Gingerbread Lift takes a rich and robust eggnog base and hoists it well above the snow line, making the case that creamy and carbonated could very well unseat sweet and salty as the next frontier in odd-couple dessert duetting. The inspiration came from a young category of cocktails called “lifts”—comprising spirit, cream, orgeat, and soda—started a decade ago in San Francisco.

Foam-topped in a towering fashion, Caer’s sorta soda float starts with the snow day–standby combo of rum, nutpods dairy-free creamer, and egg white, to which a cinnamon-and-clove-spiced molasses syrup is added for even more holiday heroics.

And then, with the help of some savvy shaker work and bubbly ginger beer, the real fun begins—a fizzy topping taking flight into the colorfully lit night sky!

’Tis the season for basking in dessert dreams (not yet, resolutions!). Accordingly, Randeen Thomas’s strapping Pinch Me Round old fashioned masquerades as the traditional Jamaican tartlets of the same name, magically mimicking their glowing flavors of coconut, ginger, and spices after a quick stir of aged rum, spiced coconut syrup, and aromatic bitters.

From the famous flaming Café Brulot to toddies, Tom and Jerrys, and more, the city of New Orleans is one of the best places to sample hot and steamy cocktails. And now a new rendition soars onto the scene from longtime French Quarter bar legend Chris Hannah.

Take a sip and snuggle up to his Cajun Butter-fly, a blend of piping hot water, aged rum, and Cajun hot butter batter, which comes together by mixing softened butter with a Big Easy–inspired dry spice blend consisting of sugars, baking spices, and cayenne pepper. Festive, soul-warming, and a fair share indulgent . . . just like the best holiday nights should be.

We have spoilers for the October 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

It’s alive! IT’S ALIVE!!

It was a recent dark and stormy night when the beakers bubbled over and the comically oversized switch was flipped, shooting sparks everywhere and slowly reanimating the most magical and monstrous occasion of all: Mezcalloween.

So far we’ve somehow survived two eerie installments, but we offer no guarantees when three more thrilling concoctions arrive on your doorstep to stalk your cocktail hours all October long—especially with an eye-opening spirit like mezcal playing puppet master.

But we must admit, it wasn’t just the holiday-hybrid pun that led to such a strong annual, seasonal showcase for mezcal. Over time, as awareness and curiosity grew among those adventurous souls brave enough to push through early gimmicks like worms or even scorpions in bottles, the reward and enjoyment of a spirit that has as much bold flavor as it does versatility became clear for all to see.

There’s the freedom to tamp down the roasted, smoky edge with brightness, lean into it to create something fierce, or simply sub it into countless recipes and bring a pronounced agave flavor to a classic of your choice.

Blessed be the three bartenders who join our coven each year to create such deliciously bone-chilling blends—a mission that’s now taken on a new imposing form as a terrifying trilogy. So if you prefer your treats to have a few tricks up their sleeves (read to the end to see the not-so-nefarious-news regarding Golden Tickets!), tear open your Mezcalloween III: A Shocker in Oaxaca Box and see all the many satisfying ways that mezcal suits these quite-spooky times.

Only by killing the Paloma as we know it could agave-spirits expert Sam Jimenez bring it back to life—bigger and bolder than before! With the amplifying addition of hibiscus, Sam works his dark magic on the citrus synergy of orange, lime, and Betty Buzz Sparkling Grapefruit.

Thankfully revived to roam free with a rim of charred tortilla salt, the lively but lumbering Paloma Muerta might become an all-too common sight around your household going forward.

One major benefit of putting on a big brunch bash in the month of October? No threat of vampires or other nocturnal nuisances showing up and making your guests quiver over their quiches. Stacey Swenson’s Red-Handed Ripper—featuring Longbottom & Co. Virgin Mary mix, dill pickle shrub, super lime juice, optional jalapeño essence, and a smoked salt-chili blend—is a perfect choice for such carefree midday celebration.

But the turned-up volume on the traditional Bloody Mary formula from mezcal’s roasted qualities and such bracing, refreshing flavors will summon you to sneak a taste elsewhere around the clock.

“The Modern Mixologist” Tony Abou-Ganim has been charting mezcal’s rise from the beginning and his Big BOO lays out a test to see what happens when mezcal teams up with a host of flavors traditionally reserved for old fashioneds centered on barrel-aged brown spirits: vanilla, cinnamon, clove, a hint of cherry, and chicory pecan bitters. The results? Big, boo-tiful, and not a fright in sight!

We have spoilers for the September 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

When it came time to plan our upcoming box, the three voices behind it topped the list! And, considering the show’s title—why not travel back in time to honor the spirit of that era, while we’re at it?!

The name of the game back in the early 1900s was low overhead and even lower awareness. The quieter the cocktail sipping—ones mainly made from bootlegged or bathtub-derived spirits—the better. And the speakeasy is a tradition that continues on to this day. Establishments currently exist around the world where you may need to navigate a repurposed public lavatory, a flower shop refrigerator, or even the scoreboard at an MLB stadium to gain entry.

To tap into this mindset of hush-hush hideaways, follow the three hosts to The Speakeasy Box, where they’re whipping up gin cocktails that have some conceptual roots in the past, but are packed with a forward-thinking creativity that can only exist in the ’20s of today. No password, no nondescript brick wall to push, just some easygoing and delicious gin fun right to your door!

The gin and tonic. Where there’s fresh air, a sliver of a sunset, and an open bar, it’s difficult to ever pass up such a refreshing pick-me-up.

Damon Boelte’s G&T relies on gin and an elite tonic to bring those best-party-ever vibes. But his next clever turn won’t go unnoticed: swapping out the single lonely citrus wedge for a warming wave of tropical, buttery-sweet pandan and banana. The Pan-Dana Tonic is ready to switch your next gathering from repetitious to roaring!

The days of slapdash spirit-making and furtively flavoring your homemade gin are thankfully over. But as the amazingly aromatic Bathtub Old Fashioned proves, it’s still a tasty exercise to take in mind the bouquet of botanicals in your gin and then pitch in some of your own to match.

To honor those maverick mixologists of yore, Greg Benson’s strategy is also firmly more is more—thyme-rooibos syrup, hopped pear bitters, aloe, and a thyme-rosemary spritz!

Sother Teague’s Bear Hat is a master stroke of bright fruit flavor served either daintily chilled and up in a Nick & Nora glass or warm in an Irish coffee mug or discreet teacup—which will help throw off any nosey parkers or prying special agents!

The cocktail—a nod to one of the world’s most beloved bruins who always kept a marmalade sandwich in his hat for emergencies—certainly includes that irresistible orange jam, along with gin, a salted Ceylon-citrus syrup, drops of vanilla extract, and grated nutmeg.

We have spoilers for the August 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

Garden parties are a beautiful summertime treat, but come August, conventional wisdom’s always been that the pool rules and the beach is king.

If our Summer Scotch series has taught us anything, though, it’s that those one or two steps away from the standard can make all the difference. For two boxes now, we’ve brought our buddy low- to no-peat Scotch to the summer bash, an all-new shades-and-slides look for a spirit that was hesitant to even loosen the necktie.

And what a welcome sight it was to see how its aged malt and strong oaky kick helped shine a light on bright ingredients typically reserved for light rums and agave spirits. So allow us another sly sidestep as we dry off, swing the garden gates open, and play with the spirit in ways that showcase the glorious natural side of the season!

By this time of year, our plots are teeming with a bounty of the best-looking herbs, fruit, and flowers around—and so too are the cocktails of the Summer Scotch 3 Box, a celebration of all things fresh and lively that’ll have lap-swimmers and land-lovers alike looking quite delighted!

Flowers, flowers, everywhere, as far as the eye can see: in Scotland where ling heather turns entire mountainsides a pleasing shade of purple, and in this tall sparkler that bar- and garden-tender Keyatta Mincey Parker has packed with petals.

In The Floral Guards, a simple whisk(e)y soda’s been gifted a stunning bouquet of hibiscus syrup and lavender bitters for bright color and flavor with a showering spritz of rosemary and thyme on top!

There’s no sting to be found in the soft and delicate Bee About It from John Codd, a West Coast bar vet with a love for interesting flavor combinations and old fashioneds.

The experience is Scotch-based, honeyed, and botanical-driven, created here by honey-sage syrup, lemon bitters, and floating drops of sage-infused olive oil, which heightens the aroma and adds li’l bits of lush texture very much worth buzzing about!

Island lover? Well, Scotland has almost 800 of them to choose from, though they may not be the kind that inspire steel drum and straw-sipping fantasies. The Torridon from Caer Maiko (currently a Top Four 2023 nominee for Tales of the Cocktail’s US Bartender of the Year Spirited Award!) contains popular elements of such tropical tipples, but heads inland to toughen up and suit more moody and craggy coastlines.

The cocktail kicks off with an infusion of Scotch and dried pineapple, which gets stirred with apricot-peach syrup, lemon bitters, and allspice. Fruity, spiced, but stiff . . . “there can be only one” hot-weather hero of these Highlands.

We have spoilers for the July 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

Getting hot enough for ya?! The dog days of summer are certainly on their way. But if you’re filling out a top five of icy cocktail favorites that help cut through the rising temperatures, chances are there’s a spirit that’s not on your list.

The big boom for pisco—regularly forecasted but never quite materializing—might actually now be on the horizon. The numbers are on the up over the last few years as people’s tastes have veered more global—and how could they not, with one taste of such unblemished beauty.

One reason that popularity might continue to surge is this priority the traditional process places on the pure expression of the grape. But you know what else is going to help pisco fever to take hold? Cocktails!

There are a few longtime favorites that keep it a staple on shelves, but the potential for a clear spirit with a shimmeringly smooth and subtle fruity backbone can be so much more. And you can get to know it a lot better in next month’s scorching-hot Pisco Inferno Boxbound to be a certified-platinum smash hit!

Subscribe now through June 30th (while supplies last!) to get yours—it’s slated to ship the week of July 3rd.

When we say “pisco,” you (will likely) say “sour!” This classic cocktail—created in Peru circa 1920 by an American expat—somehow has stronger name recognition than its indispensable spirit!

Sother Teague, ever the tasteful tinkerer, has some additional flavors in mind that pair excellently with the great subtle grapeness of the base. Without a Country treats pisco to the familiar velvety froth of egg white (with a suggestion for a vegan alternative), and then grabs some items from the global pantry, such as almondy island-spiced falernum syrup, Som pineapple Szechuan pepper cordial, and creole bitters

Thanks to Lima-born Enrique Sanchez, the traditional “purple month” celebration honoring the patron saint of Peruvians can now be tapped into year-round. The masses await you to join in spirit by stirring up this cocktail featuring a beverage that’s enjoyed around the clock in the country: chicha morada.

A boldly hued brew of purple corn, fruit peels, and spices, it has a mellow taste, often likened to mulled wine with its subtly dry tannic edge. However, it’s but one ingredient in the Mes Morado cocktail, which links it up with a veritable parade of pisco, pineapple gum syrup, and a touch of complex and bitter Underberg digestif.

The incredible unoaked lightness of pisco grants some space to play with accompaniments that add richness and depth in the old fashioned cocktail format—something Chris Hannah, the 2022 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards US Bartender of the Year, was eager to do with his Barranco

Fig was chosen as the star of the syrup to ably pitch in those warming qualities. But special mention must be paid to its dashing brand of bitters—Bitter Queens Caribbean Spice—which shoots off various pops of flavor fireworks corresponding to each part of its tropical, citrusy, floral, and spiced bouquet, a sensation extended for even longer in time thanks to the undiluting power of a coconut water ice cube!

We have spoilers for the May 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!

Have you heard? The ground will shift throughout the wide world of whiskey as the TTB is about to bestow its official stamp of recognition onto a new category of domestic whiskey: American single malt!

This decision will establish a set of parameters for what makes this category distinct—100% malted barley distilled entirely at a single US location, matured in oak, and bottled at 80 proof—and lead to a huge leap in legitimacy for American single malt whiskey (ASMW) makers who are more than ready to begin growing their new category in earnest.

Of course our ears are perking up at this development, too! We’ve had a lot of fun putting out boxes that focus on single malt whisk(e)ys—namely those from Scotland and Japan—but never before has an American version been more within our reach.

The differences between the three are not merely geographical, either (though climate does play a part). ASMW distillers seem dead-set on exploring new flavor opportunities at every possible stage in the process, from the choice of barley and the treatment of it to the oak used for aging (new or used).

So what are we to do when faced with the open road of a brand-new category of spirit? Kick the tires and take it for a spin in some cocktails, of course! In the New Frontiers 2: American Single Malt Box, you’ll find a sparkly surprise, a satisfying slice of summer, an homage to a perennial cocktail classic, and more: a delicious and inspired introduction to the whiskey stage’s newest star!

Subscribe now through April 30th (while supplies last!) to get yours—it’s slated to ship the week of May 8th.

There’s no trace of THC to be found in Christine Wiseman’s Let’s Get HighBall, but it might have you seeing things, duuuuuude. The cheeky culprit is edible glitter, which she’s been known to pinch into drinks for an extra bit of pep. In this case it’s got American single malt whiskey shimmering along with yuzu-apricot syrup and lime & yuzu soda.

Life is Peachy Keen when you’re greeting the first signs of summer with a cocktail every bit as bright and amiable as your finest Hawaiian shirt. Robert Sickler says to take yourself to the beach, BBQ, or at least the patio with this pleaser that combines American single malt with peach-basil syrup and Betty Buzz Meyer Lemon Club Soda. Read more…

And if you’re looking for your very own Lewis bag and mallet to achieve that perfectly crushed ice, we’ve got a set for you at the Make More Store!

Step off a moody, rain-soaked road and follow the sounds of the piano into a dimly lit lounge where “play it again” Sam Jimenez is serving up a new spin on a classic. A Weekend in Manhattan takes some liberties with ingredients to achieve the sensation of that beloved Big Apple–inspired cocktail: a rooibos-vanilla syrup and wild cherry bitters for those familiar mellowing fruit and botanical notes.

And thanks to everyone’s familiarity with that profile, it’s a great opportunity to see what strapping American single malt can offer in comparison with other domestic whiskeys.

We have spoilers for the April 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is The Vodka Brunch Box 2.

You can limit brunch to its dictionary definition—a late-morning meal that combines a late breakfast and an early lunch—but that’s missing a big part of what makes it so special as an occasional midday mixer. Brunch today is perhaps one of hustling-and-bustling America’s last slices of the siesta life, less about bacon and breads than it is the aspirational belief that one has the luxury to slow down and procrastinate with friends, giggle and facepalm while piecing together the adventures of last night, and simply be at brunch.

While the food portion of brunch gets the job done—albeit a bit on the stodgy side, with only so many variations on eggs and griddled batter that enjoy mass appeal—it’s the space alongside the plate where we see the real opportunity to innovate: the cocktail glass! Sure, the mimosa and Bloody Mary are the familiar favorites everyone expects to be present and, perhaps, bottomless. When viewed as launching pads, however, the spirit of those titanic tipples can be twisted into anything fruity, savory, bold, bubbly, or even caffeinated. As long as a drink’s vibe and flavors beam just as bright at noon as they do at night, then it has a seat at the brunch table.

Last year’s big brunch debut offered three cocktails that toyed with the traditional, and this year The Vodka Brunch Box 2 is getting ready to venture even further—including a generous charitable donation courtesy of our friends at The Community Spirit Vodka! We’re working with three wildly talented women at the top of their bartending game—two of whom shook up their share of cocktails on Netflix in 2022—to master drinks that’ll excite the early birds out there all April long. Subscribe now through March 31st (while supplies last!) to get yours—it’s slated to ship the week of April 3rd.

Great drinks and a great cause! For every one of The Vodka Brunch Box 2 shipped, The Community Spirit (one of our recommended vodkas for the box) will make a donation to Another Round Another Rally, a nonprofit financial and educational resource for the hospitality industry. They provide reimbursement grants and immersive educational scholarships to further the education of historically excluded voices in the community and supply emergency assistance to those employed in restaurants, bars, and hotels who have fallen on unexpected hardship.

You’re not in Kansas anymore when stepping through a door to the sensational land of Ginger and Jasmine and Pear! Oh My! Fear not the Netflix wizard and Soul Palate podcast co-host Kapri Robinson as she ushers us into the delicately tart and botanical-driven tastes of mint, jasmine, and a version of pear that turns the pep all the way up on the pome fruit. A stiff kick of vodka, ginger beer, and bitters carrying the Big Easy–going sweet and spiced notes of currant, pomegranate, and allspice complete the package for this sophisticated sip that’ll make for one wicked brunch to remember.

The 2017 Cocktail Queen from Washington, DC, Kapri has been a part of the beverage community there for over a decade. On top of being a bartender, educator, and event organizer, she is also the president and founder of Chocolate City’s Best, an organizer of Back To Black, the co-host of the Soul Palate podcast, and co-founder of Empowering the Diner, all efforts that aim to bring together Black food and beverage creators to rally continued support of Black activism, normalize Black and Brown palates, and create opportunities for BIPOC industry members. Most recently, Kapri competed on Netflix’s Drink Masters.

Did you hear about Mary? She’s taken a walk around the whimsical garden and went from bloody to lean and green in this totally reimagined savory brunch superstar. No stranger to the spritz, Stacey Swenson has turned to vodka and all things earthy, vivid, and verdant—tomatillo, celery, cucumber, poblano, and Thai chili pepper—to create a piquant blend that achieves liftoff from lime and refreshing tonic water. Mary’s new makeover, the Green Demon, arrives this April wearing a crown of green peppercorn–everything bagel seasoning, and she’s ready for her brunchy close-up!

Formerly the head bartender at NYC’s Dante, Stacey moved on to a new role as bar manager at the newly opened Bar Pisellino until it shut in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She also heads up creative drinks strategies for Simple Serve and was named StarChefs Rising Star bartender of 2019.

Fresh off a stirring, starring turn on Netflix (as well as a win at the 2022 Spirited Awards for opening the best new bar in the US), Kate Gerwin continues to aim high, this time with a cocktail creation that, as its name implies, clears an important bar for the brunch hours—but Better Than a Pop Tart is not served in a blinding silver sleeve. This craveable old fashioned is a mix of cozy caramel-vanilla-tea-infused vodka, chicory bitters, and warm and fuzzy green chile syrup (a nod to her beloved Albuquerque) and it’s surely one balanced and high-quality way to start the day!

In 2014, Kate became the first woman and first American to win the Bols Around the World Bartending Championship. A veteran consultant and designer of bar programs around the country as well as a co-owner of Happy Accidents, a bar/distillery in Albuquerque, NM, her “crowning moment,” as she calls it, was being inducted into the Tales of the Cocktail’s Dame Hall of Fame in 2015.  Most recently, Kate competed all the way to the final round on Netflix’s Drink Masters.

We have spoilers for the March 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is DShift Drinks: Reposado Remix Box.

More and more menu real estate these days is being devoted to signature cocktails. No longer an afterthought or hidden in a booklet among hundreds of wines by the bottle, the bartender’s thoughtfully crafted offerings—tailored to fit the cuisine and sensibility of the establishment—have continued to rise in prominence and visibility.

And to tap into the inspired synergy between the front and back of the house, the Shift Drinks: Reposado Remix Box features three tequila reposado cocktails, two of which were first featured in the inaugural round back in early 2019, created by coworker chefs and bartenders at the time. The other one we, your servers, will recite as an ear-catching special of the day: a fresh, new offering from Sother Teague, who’s no stranger to straddling the line between the culinary and cocktail universes!

Each features boundary-pushing ingredients assembled with masterful technique and flair. And with a step-by-step food pairing for each drink, the local hotspot with an hours-long waitlist’s got nothing on your home this March. Make your reservation today and pull up a chair!

The Last Night I Dreamed, created by Patrick Natola and Chef Justin Rucobo, is a bracing and crisp daiquiri-margarita hybrid that points the way forward to sunnier days ahead made for perusing the local farmer’s market for ingredients and inspiration. There’s a bounty of fresh, green produce packed into this reposado cocktail by way of an herbaceous and vegetal cilantro-jalapeño syrup and a dose of fresh lime.

Emilio “Milo” Salehi and Chef Arnold Eric Wong pay tribute to the time-honored traditions of the Mexican kitchen with their old fashioned, the Mortar & Pestle. The toasted nuttiness from the sesame and coconut nods to the preparation of a mole sauce, which typically requires dozens of ingredients and several days.

Luckily, quite a bit less work is required to combine the syrup and extract on ice and stir, along with tequila and, of course, mole bitters. The result is rich, earthy, and unforgettable.

Driftwood Bitters, a Donn’s Mix–adjacent blend of bright grapefruit and cinnamon, was Sother Teague’s very first contribution to the bitters shelf. And it makes its S&S debut next month in his Ash and Elm, a tasty, tall number that combines tequila reposado with hibiscus-lemon-rosemary syrup and grapefruit soda, with a ring of Sother’s hibiscus salt!

We have spoilers for the February 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Daijoubu 2 Box.

Where in the world will Daijoubu’s Caer Maiko and Sharon Yeung, the traveling superstars of “super Asian cocktails,” bring their funky style of festivities next? Hmmm, we may have an idea . . . and it will be just the combination to spirit you away from the everyday ho-hum: Japanese whisky and Daijoubu Pop Up at home will have you saying Kanpai! and feeling more than just fine in no time at all!

The beauty of a cocktail pop-up concept is that it’s agile enough to move and shake to an establishment near you practically on a whim. And Caer and Sharon have certainly been keeping busy doing just that!

They’ve curated an experience steeped in their Asian American identities that’s gone coast to coast on a mission to fulfill the potential they see for bold and imaginatively applied Asian flavors—the sweet, savory, and everything in between—to supplant the standard and humdrum when it comes to cocktail menus.

And what a creative cross-country trek it’s been! Some of the standout creations they’ve cooked up for crowds have featured far-out flavor combinations such as a Twin Dragon almond cookie syrup, cherry blossom vermouth, matcha horchata, and more! So, again, where are the drinkable delights of Daijoubu going to pop up next? Ever heard of a little place called your home address!?

And it won’t be the first time! Way back in 2020, we were first dazzled by the inaugural Daijoubu Box, which included some enduring catalog favorites such as the Seoulful Sour. For this round, which arrives right on the tail end of the 15-day Lunar New Year celebration, Caer and Sharon will be taking care of all your cocktail needs—with Japanese whisky in the spotlight.

There will be dazzling drinks for days in the Daijoubu 2 Box—along with a chance to grab some sweet swag for a lucky group of subscribers!—and a ton of excitement to tide you over until Caer and Sharon someday roll into your town in the flesh!

Here, Caer and Sharon tip their caps to both the Chinese dessert Tang Yuan and to Usagi Tsukino, better known as the 1990s manga icon Sailor Moon. Just like her, there are two personas to In the Name of the Moon—it can be made warm or cold!—and after fat-washing Japanese whisky with nutty, savory sesame oil, the cocktail shoots skyward in either form thanks to its adorable mochi garnish and Cosmic Heart syrup, which richly blends woodsy Chinese licorice root and ginger spice.

If it’s a Daijoubu Box, smart money’s on there being a tasty tea concoction in the mix. The first time Caer and Sharon took us to the land of abundant brews, we learned the ABCsregarding the importance of the beverage in Chinese and Japanese cultures—and now their cool, refreshing Thai One On moves to a full-flavored and iced fave from another country.

While Thai iced tea is the inspiration, this cocktail is a considerably lighter take that features coconut water instead of the traditional condensed milk, a breezier base to help it boast the nuances of Japanese whisky and Thai tea syrup, as well as additional accents of orange and curry.

1977: the year of Luke Skywalker, the Bee Gees, and . . . Yu Seok-ho. While many Americans may not know him by name, Yu is considered the father of another famous KFC—Korean fried chicken! Yu traveled to America in the 1970s and then brought some secrets back to open the first modern Korean fried chicken establishment, Lim’s Chicken. A dish so big that it’s put Seoul right up there with the Southern states, it arrives alongside a colorful kaleidoscope of banchan (small side dishes) and is sufficiently sauced—the flavors of which inspired Caer and Sharon to develop this sweet, sour, savory sparkling cocktail.

The KFC Buck teams up Japanese whisky with lime and yuzu soda, plus a shrub based on the popular condiment yangnyeom that features rice vinegar, soy, garlic, gochujang, and strawberries all blended into one taste that’s fruity, unfried!, and full of yummy umami undertones

We have spoilers for the January 2023 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Ginspirations!

For seemingly forever, those seeking diversity in the gin category would’ve had to choose between the London dry, slightly sweeter Plymouth, and even sweeter Old Tom varieties—but that all changed once producers outside the UK began to tinker with the juniper-forward gem.

In just the limited sample of our recommendations this month—bottles from Japan, the Philippines, and Africa—the flavors jumping out in front may include sakura (cherry blossom), pomelo, and Zambian baobab fruit, respectively. And that’s just one small plot in the garden of the modern New World gin movement. With juniper still in tow, the spirit is zooming forward by the day, and cocktails that call for it would do well to keep up with this breakneck pace.

Luckily, the three popping up on the other side of the New Year are crackling with the same bold, creative energy. A clean slate full of promise and endless potential is coming in the Ginspirations Box, and sips like these (including an adaptation of Suzu’s signature drink from the show Drink Masters!) are quite an inspirited way to kick it all off.

Trevor Frye’s Worth Three in the Saddle is an understated range-rider, boasting the soft flavors of gin, honey, and hops, the latter swinging into town thanks to the zero alcohol Hoppy Refresher from California craft brewery Lagunitas. In this shimmering shandy-style cocktail, even lime and apple cider vinegar keep their loud sharpness to themselves and fall back in support of the softer main trio.

Fancy a dance between two botanical behemoths? Where gin’s bundle of flavors begins and chai’s spices end in Matty McGee’s Cha-Cha is anyone’s guess. Especially when the floor fills in with the hot and trendy two-step of tonic water and cold brew, delivering on the promise of the pair’s irresistibly refreshing bright and dark duality. (The tonic arrives from our friends at Betty Buzz, a maker of yummy mixers founded by Blake Lively.)

It ends as all great performances do—with flowers!—as a spritz of lavender bitters provides the perfect fête for such fantastic footwork.

And the Emmy for captivating and charismatic performance in a reality competition series goes to . . . Christian Suzuki-Orellana (Suzu)! It was impossible not to fall for the S&S alum and San Francisco bartender on Netflix’s Drink Masters this fall. And soon you’ll get to know Suzu even better with this warm hug of a sipper inspired by the moment-savoring nature of tea ceremonies in Japan, where he spent time with his family throughout his childhood.

Combining gin with genmaicha tea, yuzu, ginger, and nori, the Ichi-Go-Ichi-E (“savor the moment”) is an adaptation of his signature drink (featured in one of the show’s challenges as the Furusato), and it offers a loving lesson on taking bold flavors and presenting them in demure, delicious style.

Shaker and Spoon September 2022 Spoilers

We have spoilers for the September 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Puttin’ on the Spritz 2: Italian Affair!

Imagine an Italian vacation: the labyrinthian streets of Rome, the rural landscapes of Tuscany, a sun-soaked laze out on the coast. For all its historical variety, there are a few hours out of 24 shared in common from southern Sicily to the northern Swiss border: the post-work and pre-dinner time—when bright, bubbly, and sometimes bitter spritzes meet on-the-house salty snacks—known as aperitivo.

Now there’s a new addition to this scene uniting the country, this time in scent and flavor. Drawing from a long list of native fruits and botanicals, Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto is a light and citrusy liqueur that wants to put rosolio right alongside vermouths and amari on their modern-day march to peak global popularity.

So what’s in our glasses next month? Three inspired spritzes that see Italicus and extra dry prosecco fizzing away with refreshing fruity and floral flavors and other surprises that’ll have you delighting in more than a few dusks.

With Puttin’ on the Spritz 2: Italian Affair, this magical mindset will be within reach at a moment’s notice—right on time for a high-romance happy hour spent daydreaming of your next trip to bountiful Bel Paese. Subscribe now through August 31st to get this box—it’s slated to ship the week of September 5th. You don’t want to miss out on the Golden Ticket (keep scrolling to learn more)!\

Life will be Just Peachy when this chill number from Mia Mastroianni breezes into your high-temp summer-day tableau. Featuring a strong lead performance by Italicus, a great deal of chemistry between extra dry prosecco and a delightful peach-lavender syrup, and some added drama from club soda, it’s the very definition of must-see and -taste spritzing!

The low-ABV lifestyle is rip-roaring these days, perhaps because it makes the phrase One More Please!! such an easy call. And that’s the perfect order when it comes to Dario Doimo’s spritz, in which a pinch of sea salt elevates and joins together the singular citrus burst of Italicus with prosecco and added waves of fruitiness from grapefruit soda and hibiscus apple bitters.

Valentino Longo’s Full Bloom takes a rich and full-flavored approach to the spritz, a depth he delivers to Italicus and extra dry prosecco with ginger beer and a crisply complex red grape and fennel seed cordial. And if the senses are looking for even more excitement, look to the rim where a lemongrass salt keeps the aromas lingering throughout.

We have spoilers for the July 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Sun’s Out, Rums Out Box!

Many a conversation has kicked off with this clichéd but effective icebreaker: What would you bring with you to a deserted island? A hammock, boogie board, or good book would certainly fit the bill—but if the category is island drinks, then there’s another slam-dunk case to be made.

That rum is right at home among crashing waves and private coves should come as no surprise given its Caribbean beginnings. Even far from the sandy shores, though, this spirit can satisfy just as naturally at your landlocked cocktail den of choice, in a wide range of styles and alongside an endless array of flavor companions.

This versatility is on full display in the Sun’s Out, Rums Out Box. We’ll be serving up complex and oak barrel–impacted rum in three distinct and delicious ways, all with a nudge and a nod to the spirit’s beloved sun-and-sand sensibilities. Subscribe now through June 30th (while supplies last!) to get this box—shipping the week of July 4th.

It’ll surely perk you up, but Kate Gerwin’s Wake me up before you GO GO isn’t just any ol’ iced coffee. For starters, there’s aged rum buzzing throughout, which sets a superior summer scene as it catches a wave of rich coconut syrup.

After that? Wham! The signature quenching quinine kick of tonic water acts as the cool-off and changes the character—of what would be a rather robust cocktail!—completely for the brighter.

Life’s got just a little more Luster with a cocktail that embodies the surroundings of a sun-soaked tropical locale. Steva Casey greets you there with this welcome drink, which complements and deepens the spice notes of aged rum with honey-fig syrup and an espresso salt rim.

But it’s the islands, after all, and an invigorating taste from a tropical ginger beer—pulsing with the flavors of pineapple, mango, and passion fruit—adjusts and anchors the vibes of swimsuits and shades accordingly.

A treasure chest appears, and an open sesame reveals a stiff but summery old fashioned that’s got its share of secrets to spill. The Gentleman Pirate from (U.S. Bartender of the Year nominee!) Caer Maiko gives aged rum a subtle new savory set of flavors by way of a sesame oil fat wash.

And what’s Arrrrgh-uably the perfect accompaniment for such an elevated sense of nuttiness? A syrup ripe with bananas, of course, along with the roasty accents of chicory bitters.

We have spoilers for the June 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is The Vodka Brunch Box !

Cock-a-doodle-do! Rise, shine, and start feeling fine, because next month, cocktail o’clock might just land a little earlier than usual.

When the sun rises on a brunch-less day, so many hours must pass before shaking or stirring a cocktail gets jotted down on the to-do list. But for those who are lucky enough to occasionally partake in such casual carousing, there’s no better way to shake off the days prior and set a spirited tone for the one stretching out ahead.

Over the years, our boxes have featured countless drinks to enjoy while twirling away in the twilight hours—so now it’s time for a slight change: three options primed to become the belles of your next brunch.

Our bartenders have taken three favorites of the format—coffee, mimosa, and a Bloody Mary—and spun them into creative, memorable, and flavor-packed versions with the best spirit for ably stretching into many different directions: vodka!

More nocturnally inclined? Worry not. Just like Christmas in July, brunch for dinner proves that sometimes the incongruous can be exciting. Sign up one and all alongside us noontime revelers for The Vodka Brunch Box and you’ll discover a magical cocktail menu—perhaps right smack in the midday! Subscribe now through May 31st to get yours—shipping the week of June 6th.

It’s hard to get simpler than the one-two makeup of a mimosa, whose composition inspired Kapri Robinson as she strove for crisp and clean flavors in her refreshing Blood & Sage. She found both the citrus and bubbles in a bracing blood orange ginger ale that vitalizes this springtime combo of vodka and perfectly seasonal herbed sage syrup.

What happens when Sother Teague gets his hands on a towering titan of vodka cocktails? A marvelous Mary that’s miles away from the ordinary! It’s bright and refreshing and yet has savory surprises at every turn.

For The Weekender, Sother developed a flavor-packed secret weapon: a garden-infused vinegar medley that joins apple cider vinegar and tomato vinegar and infuses the blend with horseradish, garlic, and black pepper. Roll it with vodka and an umami-rich, vegetarian-friendly, tomato-vine-ripe base from Q Mixers—with space to spare, if you like, for our favorite local hot sauce (Kimchili included) or one of your own.

And for the garnish? Why choose just one when you can enjoy “everything”—a finishing-touch seasoning blend that travels a short distance from the bagel right to this Bloody!

After that steamy morning mug of reanimation, or even in place of it at the brunch table, look forward to this chilled cocktail that applies an Italian-accented touch to those all-important beans.

The Slow Rush, from Chelsea Santos, is a breezier version of the typically buzzy coffee old fashioned, thanks to the mellowing flavors of cherry and vanilla. From there, chocolate mole bitters and some liqueur-style bitterness from the orange spritz syrup swing in for a treat akin to a vodka sundae for your next round of Sundays!

We have spoilers for the May 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is BRING ON THE BOURBON!

Our bridge to summer (aka the month of May) is within sight, and the time has finally come to throw open the windows, shout “Bring it on!” into the temperate wind, and allow a legendary spirit to shine.

As veteran Shaker & Spoon sleuths out there may already know, previous bourbon boxes have produced some of the most enduringly popular hits of our cocktail catalog—a factoid that should come as no surprise, as the Kentucky-born spirit has played such a prominent role at the bar throughout history. Bourbon may have been second to rye whiskey chronologically, but quickly it featured interchangeably alongside it—and was strongly preferred in the twentieth century, though that’s changing—in versions of old fashioneds, Manhattans, and sours, to name just a few. With its makeup of at least 51% corn and an unmistakable voice given by charred-oak aging, bourbon is a distinguished and delicious go-to, and it’s adaptable enough to make a fan out of anyone.

When it comes to the three bartenders featured in the upcoming Bring on the Bourbon Box, their creations are always candidates for the next big S&S hit. And these bourbon cocktails are getting set to fully sing of the spirit while taking light and bright turns in celebration of that special time of year when summer begins to show its sunny smile to spring. Subscribe now through April 30th (while supplies last!) to get the Bring on the Bourbon Box—it’s slated to ship the week of May 2nd (and we know Mother’s Day is right around the corner on May 8th!).

A self-admitted agave spirits guy first and foremost, Sam Jimenez is excited to take on bourbon and tap into its capabilities as a lively refresher. To help achieve this, he’s reached back to a 100-year-old American soda brand that’s recently been breathing new life into its legacy. His tall, easygoing sparkler poses the question, Is it Summer Yet? And the answer, despite what the calendar says, must be a resounding yes after a spritz of sage and a taste of the crushable combination of bourbon, strawberry-rhubarb syrup, and Reading Draft Honey Pear soda.

Sam is a 27-year veteran of the food and beverage industry, a crafter of cocktails, and a connoisseur of Mexico’s agave-based spirits. He currently represents small-batch craft distilleries that are working to keep Mexico’s unique liquid culture alive.

The citrus is certainly strong with Robert Sickler in this cocktail he’s invitingly labeled a “fun patio pounder.” Exactly as it should be with The Caloosahatchee, an homage to the southern Florida river whose banks he grew up on, surrounded by fresh fruit trees. His chosen bounty to accompany bourbon on a mound of crushed ice is orange two ways (in a sparkling soda and smoked orange bitters), along with a lemongrass-ginger-lemon syrup that brings dynamic depth to all that satisfying sunshine.

Robert is the owner and operator of Bayou Bodega Natural Wine Bar in Tampa and the host of the spirits podcast Raise a Glass. He’s also the owner of Voice of Whisky, a company specializing in whisky tastings and education, and is a licensed instructor for the Whisky Ambassador program based in Glasgow, Scotland.

As far as modern hybridized holidays go, it’s hard to beat the years when the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo collide and inspire festive parties nicknamed Derby de Mayo. And, while a tequila julep indeed sounds nice, here’s an old fashioned that can certainly crowd-please like no other. Christine Wiseman’s Choco Facto stars bourbon side by side in harmony with spiced and nutty Mexican chocolate and barrel-aged coffee bitters for a cultural blend that’ll send your fiesta off to the races!

Christine is the beverage director of Bar Lab Hospitality Group, a position that’s taken her from Broken Shaker Los Angeles all the way to Miami, where she leads the bar programs at Margot, Hoja, and Broken Shaker.

We have spoilers for the April 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is ALL EYES ON RYE!

The story of rye, both as a crop and style of whiskey, is one of resilience and heritage. As the long winter’s approaching and a farmer needs something to last the season and protect and enrich their soil through lingering low temperatures, rye’s a mighty fine go-to. When Prohibition knocked rye whiskey off the top shelf and a long reign of clear spirits and bourbon began, it still managed to get up from the mat for a resounding rally—that’s hardiness.

Rye whiskey was withering as recently as the turn of the millennium, so what changed? What was it that helped save one of the very first American-made spirits from the brink of extinction? In a word, cocktails. In the mid-2000s, when a new spark of creativity brought droves of discerning patrons into bars across the country, an effort began to bring rye back, not only to reclaim its role in the classics, like Manhattans and old fashioneds, but also to assert its full-flavored dry spiciness in new, avant-garde concoctions.

With All Eyes on Rye we can’t wait to see how a new generation of artful mixologists further fortifies the roots of this robust spirit. Our bartenders have charted three paths forward, each showcasing the spirit for a delicious getaway in a glass. The seasons are slow to turn these days, but settle in and fix your gaze and palate on this whiskey for a very helpful rye-minder: a fun and adventurous rebound is always right up ahead!

Once upon a time, Mony Bunni told us one very special thing, and we’ve been all ears ever since. And now with this sumptuous cocktail, Mony welcomes you to the world of Levant and Mediterranean regional desserts with a lip-smacking take on a legend—the Baklawa Sour. The syrup tastes of honey, walnut, and rose and orange blossom waters and, along with an egg white for a luscious texture, it shakes up the sharp edge of rye into something considerably softer and brighter. Countless families have their own guarded, time-tested version of the recipe for this holiday-favorite treat, but thankfully this drink won’t be a secret for long.

First-generation Arab American and Chicago-native Mony was the Season 6 national champion of Speed Rack. She is currently the beverage development specialist at Tenzing Wine and Spirits and is a cofounder of Support Staff, a nonprofit focused on improving the mental health of Chicago’s hospitality community.

The street sign reads Bourbon, but Ryan Maybee is wandering through New Orleans with rye in mind. His Creole Sling takes the flavors of the area’s dark and nutty chicory-charged style of coffee and goes bold for bold with sturdy rye whiskey. But much like any good jazz number, just wait till the great nuanced notes come marching in from vanilla-cinnamon maple syrup, pecan, and uplifting, zesty orange. The bayou doesn’t have to be by you to sling back this rich, aromatic pick-me-up and keep you in the best of spirits!

Ryan is a certified sommelier, a certified specialist of wine from the Society of Wine Educators, and, in 2012, became the first person to complete the Bar Master Certification from Beverage Alcohol Resource in NYC. The following year he partnered with Andy Rieger to revive Jacob Rieger & Company.

While the Homestead Old Fashioned is named for the rye-history-relevant borough on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, it’s also an apt indicator of the place it’s best enjoyed—your abode. What’s that? You’ve seen quite enough of your house over the past year? Granted, but it won’t be difficult after sipping this blend of baking spices, peppy peppercorns, and rye to imagine your once-familiar walls as those of the most cozy of cabin settings. Despite the ice, Spencer Warren’s classically minded cocktail is a beckoning beam of warmth for an experience that will be the cherry on top of your night in. After all, be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.

A Steel City craft-cocktail pioneer, Spencer has opened many places in Pittsburgh over the years, including Embury, and brought back the much-anticipated Miracle Holiday Pop-Up Bar & PopUp Embury. His most recent openings were the neighboring Penn Cove Eatery and the Warren Bar & Burrow in 2018.

We have spoilers for the March 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Kick Back with Cognac!

Historically, Cognac has been a spirit more commonly seen in a lavish home library or, in this millennium, a hip-hop video, than in a starring role on a cocktail menu.

But with a rich and smooth texture, a wide range of mild floral, nut, and wood flavors, and a few classic mixes to its name—Sidecar, Vieux Carré, and the original Corpse Reviver—its versatility and potential is being re-appreciated and eagerly explored by the pros right before our eyes.

And this March, we’re keeping the creativity rolling on this sophisticated but totally approachable spirit to help you fully Kick Back with Cognac, a breezy time to shake, stir, infuse, and dally as a bon vivant to see what the fuss regarding this special French brandy is all about.

Subscribe now through February 28th (while supplies last!) to get the Kick Back with Cognac Box—it’s slated to ship the week of March 7th.

To emerge from a stretch of winter-warming offerings, in this case one must Cherchez la Femme (“look for the woman”)—the one and only Kellie Thorn (also the creator of fan-favorite Citrus Paradisi!)

She’s got a way with brandy that’s fully on display in this bright and bubbly cooler that complements the woody and floral spirit with some traditional flavors of the season. This refreshing highball features accents of cardamom and a grenadine infused with tart cranberry and herbaceous juniper.

There’s a good reason why the most popular pineapple cake is flipped and served upended: the baked state of the tropical fruit demands a position of prominence with its downright deliciousness.

Ms. Franky Marshall achieves this in cocktail form right-side-up (don’t spill!) in her Date Night by matchmaking caramelized pineapple syrup and decadent date-infused Cognac with coconut water playing it cool as a quenching, much-welcomed third wheel.

Within Michael Holiday’s Spiced Berry Sipper is a collection of compatible flavor sensations, with juicy strawberry linking up with the Cognac’s fruitiness and cardamom, anise, and Angostura bitters stepping up its spiced qualities.

But this old fashioned effort to bring out the best in your spirit comes with a touch of added complexity from herbal and earthy angelica root, a botanical common to the bouquet that flavors a host of liqueurs, vermouths, and gins.

We have spoilers for the February 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is What’ll It Be? Whisk(e)y Box!

We heart tequila! And did you know that this agave spirit gets bolder than blanco and even richer than reposado? Añejo is the name and “gracing cocktails that are friendly to all seasons with an amber look and a more robust take on the tequila taste” is its game.

We’re ready to tackle this tasty spirit in a season-defyingly sassy way by using musical inspirations to celebrate its irresistible intersection of light and darkness. It’s winter, after all, but even if your neighborhood’s far too nippy to inspire outright jubilation, grab your Añejo, Let’s Go! Box and let a little bit of song and dance into your soul!

Subscribe now through January 31st (while supplies last!) to get the Añejo, Let’s Go! Box—it’s slated to ship the week of February 7th.

Donny Clutterbuck makes easy work of channeling musical inspirations into his cocktail creations—like this bubbly breath of fresh air, Feather Billet, which he crafted while grooving to the band PREP.

His refreshing blend is a two-step between the lush, dried fruit-sweetness of añejo and the bright, floral, and spice stylings of grapefruit soda, rose syrup, and chocolate mole bitters, teaching a whole new set of peppy dance moves to the crowd-pleasing Paloma.

It takes a tuned-in ’tender to serve and dazzle the kinetic music-loving crowds of Austin, TX, from behind the bar—as evidenced by The Beat Goes On, a fan-favorite reissue.

In this amped old fashioned (or hot toddy, if you wish), Jessica Sanders summons the spirit of the capital city into a mojo syrup layered with complexity from spices like vanilla, ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon and pairs it with a blend of orange and aromatic bitters to turn the dial way up on your añejo!

Hitting many of the same bracing beats as the classic Penicillin, Christopher Frierson’s Dublin After Dark hot toddy soothes as a warm mix of whisk(e)y, ginger-turmeric syrup, and fresh lemon, but then miraculously ramps up to enliven an evening when shaken with ice for a perky sour.

When the horns of Analise Stettner’s Tijuana Brass start ringing out, you know you’re in for a good time.

Bask in an exploratory jam session as a large coconut-water ice cube blends with deeply flavorful añejo and aromatic cinnamon demerara syrup and a bitters medley that includes notes of long pepper and hibiscus, weaving in and out of themes and gradually changing the mystical melodies of the drink as it settles right alongside you.

We have spoilers for the January 2022 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is What’ll It Be? Whisk(e)y Box!

For next month’s adventure, the choice is yours between three styles of whisk(e)y as a base and two different builds (either hot or cold) which, for the most expeditious imbibers, could lead to eighteen(!) potential combinations. All done with that math? Then onto the deliciousness!

Set out the What’ll It Be? Whisk(e)y Box with your favorite style of whisk(e)y and ask yourself the all-important questions: Is a winter warmer what I’m after, or is a more customary and cooling sipper going to suit the night?

And thanks to our three bartenders, not one but two riveting and seasonable recipes are coming your way for each cocktail. And what a tremendous whisk(e)y region- and temperature-traversing time it’ll be! Subscribe now through December 31st (while supplies last!) to get the What’ll It Be? Whisk(e)y Box—it’s slated to ship the week of January 10th.

Inspired by a Gaelic river charmer, The Winter Water Sprite from Annie Pierce tempts with the rich, natural brown sugar–sweetness of dates and figs, with a magical finishing touch of anise-like fennel for good measure.

Stir on ice and sit back with a sturdy sip of an old fashioned, or choose to warm it up and watch chamomile-infused whiskey take flight on clouds of aromatic steam.

If you’re wandering the trails out in the winter wild, be on the lookout and don’t miss the radiantly red Rough Diamond.

For its rich color, Nicholas Hogan’s steamy toddy or frosty old fashioned relies on delicate rosehip and bold blackberries and currants for a soothing sensation of floral and fruity flavor. And the exploration of the outdoors continues with orange bitters and a hint of Douglas fir for a sipper most befitting of a snowy scene.

We have spoilers for the November 2021 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Fruits of Fall: American Apple Brandy!

As we looked ahead and considered the ideal starring spirit for November, a time to be thankful and hopeful heading into the holiday season, capturing the flavors and scents of autumn quickly became the aim. We thought back to how, when it came time for America to stake a claim on a spirit of its own—coincidentally during the decades surrounding its own founding—Northeastern pioneers and even presidents needed only to look up at the trees.

As with many historical gems dormant through the spinning wheel of cocktail trends, American apple brandy has benefited from a modern boom of history-minded spirits makers who place just as great a value on the old as on the new. For evidence, look no further than the bottled-in-bond apple brandies produced across the country today that’ve inspired this box—a distinction that boasts full transparency and provenance, with great respect paid to the apple crop and the place at which it’s distilled.

Let Fruits of Fall: American Apple Brandy transition you smoothly into the season with an appetizing appley base and equally of-the-moment ingredients for cocktails that’ll nestle right up alongside its best sense memories: crisp weather, fantastic foliage, and aromatic ovens. Subscribe now through October 31st (while supplies last!) to get the Fruits of Fall Box—it’s slated to ship the week of November 1st.

Haley Traub’s Pear Necessities pairs off the apple of the brandy with its pome fruit pal in the form of a shrub that sees the sensational combination of pear and vanilla taking a sharp upturn along with apple cider vinegar. Tying together this tight-knit team, ginger beer brings its bracing bubbles for a flavor of homey harmony and an aroma you’ll wish you could bottle and bask in.

With this freshly in-season cocktail, Leah Moss looked to the once-forgotten classic Jack Rose for inspiration. She’s packed in some neat and nuanced late-fall flavors into her Rougeoisie: a grenadine riff enriched by bright cranberries, a dash of aromatic bitters, and fervently fruity apple brandy, all lifted up by lime and a sprinkling of freshly grated nutmeg on top.

In honor of the trees starting to set forth their fireworks displays of rich reds, oranges, and yellows, here’s an old fashioned that harbors the arbor with one such tasty type. To boost a syrup modeled to capture the flavors of chai, Jason Kilgore chose birch, which twists the warm spices with a touch of minty wintergreen.

With such soft essences swirling around, it takes a spirit of great stature to carry the cocktail and, in Wolfe & Wehr, bottled-in-bond apple brandy takes center stage, pitching in its apple, wood, and spice flavors with a clearly defined voice for a stiff and warming autumn celebration.

Something’s out there. Lurking around the shadow-laden Oaxacan fields is a sensational spirit that showcases the earthy taste of agave with a devilishly roasted, smoky edge, and it’s ready to pounce during your upcoming month of thrilling, chilling cocktail glass–filling.

Sure, there’s nothing particularly spooky about the dependability and deliciousness of mezcal—but October nights certainly have a way of inspiring the eerie, and we think that mezcal’s looming savory undercurrent makes it an ideal choice to dabble in the dance between black magic and the light and bright. So down to the crypt we go, where pleasing potions from three of our favorite bewitching bartenders are bubbling over and bound for bottling.

This Halloween, take your mezcal to Maui with the sublime Spellbinder in two possible ways—shaken or blended! Read more…

And if you’re looking for your very own Lewis bag and mallet to achieve that perfectly crushed ice, we’ve got a set for you on the Make More Store!

Follow El Alma, whose name means “the soul,” to Jules Snow’s inviting intersection of two different classic cocktail formulas. There’s the mezcal and fresh-lime base of a margarita and the ginger kick and effervescence of a mule, all combining with juicy peach for an enchanting and spirit-satisfying great time.

Chris Elford’s cauldron is overflowing with this old fashioned that melds mezcal with a bit of well-seasoned boldness. The Mystic Brew ascends to a faraway, robust realm with Angostura bitters and a spiced cold brew syrup that flavors rich coffee with star anise, cardamom, and clove. Swirl it up and complete this official cocktail of the otherworldly with two very mezcal-friendly garnishes: an uplifting spritz of grapefruit oil and a smoldering cinnamon stick.

We have spoilers for the July 2021 Shaker & Spoon box!  The box theme is Catching Up with Cachaça!

At the Copa, Copacabana, it’s said that music and passion are always the fashion, but did you know that the drinks are top-notch, too? Inside the NYC nightclub Barry Manilow so splashily sang about, yes—but even more so directly from the source: the coastal neighborhood within Rio de Janeiro, a land of samba, sunshine, and ice-cold cachaça cocktails.

No beach day, especially in Brazil, is complete without the muddled mix of lime, sugar, and spirit called a caipirinha, but the road to formal recognition for its star was a long one. Its push for legitimacy culminated fairly recently with three major milestones: the United States’ marking it as a distinctive product of Brazil in 2013, and two enormous marketing opportunities when the country hosted the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

This led to countless “What to Drink During . . .” articles and elevated those festivities for sports fans by showing them how to fill their glasses and hearts with cachaça as the Cariocas so joyfully do.

Like the margarita did for tequila internationally, this cemented the caipirinha’s status as an ultra-tasty Trojan horse for cachaça, delighting drinkers with simplicity but then piquing their appetite for more ways to complement its earthy funk and fruitiness. One formula was not enough to fully express the complexity of this belle of Brazil.

Along with this new cachet, the roster of supporting ingredients and ways to enjoy cachaça have expanded, but the lively and fresh vibes largely aren’t budging—and what better time than July to soak in such radiance? Join us as we’re Catching Up with Cachaça for some much needed R&R (reveling and refreshment)! Subscribe now through June 30th (while supplies last!) to get this box—it’s slated to ship the week of July 5th.

Caribbean connoisseur Shannon Mustipher’s tasty tropical Wavy Colada begins with a new slick beach body for cachaça by way of a coconut oil fat wash, and from there, the hot-weather hits keep on coming: pineapple juice, a cordial inspired by tiki idol Donn Beach’s citrus and spices mixture known as Don’s Mix (a legendary, essential ingredient of many tiki drinks, including the original 1934 zombie recipe), and a splash of sharp and malty beer vinegar.

Served elegantly up by Christopher Longoria, the Ipanema Daydream satisfies cachaça’s call for verdant companions with a dynamic jalapeño-mint-lime cordial and pops of celery seed salt on top, and keeps the summer reverie rolling with cooling watermelon juice.

Think of this light and lustrous blend like your trendiest piece of day-to-night transition wear, brilliantly beaming along with the sun and perfectly suiting a sassy scene after it sets.

This old fashioned scores big thanks to a cocktail collaboration befitting of Brazil, the country with the most World Cup titles. The play-by-play is as follows: cachaça lover and Major League Soccer goalkeeper Stefan Frei brainstorms a bevy of potential tea elements to complement the spirit and passes it off to fellow Seattleite Adam Way, who then applies his cocktail know-how to turn it into a reality.

The resulting aromatic Give and Go fields a team of first flush Darjeeling syrup and Earl Grey and chai bitters to showcase the mellow and earthy side of cachaça for a truly trophy-worthy summer night sipper!

Shaker and Spoon May 2021 Spoilers

We have spoilers for the June 2021 Shaker & Spoon box!  It will include:

With Beale Street, Music City, and the Great Smoky Mountains on our minds, we’re waltzing into summer with a storied spirit, the humble beginnings of which went on to take the world by storm. And we promise, wherever the season finds you, with Tennessee whiskey in your glass, you’ll be feelin’ finer than frog’s hair.

We’ve got two Tennessean tour guides eager to bring you the beautiful vibes of their home state by serving up its legendary spirit in imaginative, summer-ready ways. Light your torches and kick back on your porches, because the Out to Tennessee Box is coming right up for some warm and hazy Southern-style sippin’! Subscribe now through May 31st to get this box—it’s slated to begin to ship the week of June 7th.

Second to sunscreen, the essential you’ll need to thrive in the high temps and bright rays will be a tall, sparkling glass of Hiwassee River Water. Nneka Ijeoma crafted this cocktail with summer fun in mind, name checking a Tennessee waterway known for fishing, rafting, and other rousing recreation. Grab your spot on the banks and be sure to bring this whiskey and tonic, with a nudge of lemongrass and punch of cooling honeydew.

At the heart of your upcoming Summer Fling is a shrub with great depth of flavor from earthy, rich beets and fragrant rosemary. The color is a resplendent tone of red and the taste quite tempting when brilliantly balanced by Tennessee whiskey, sparkling water, and orange bitters. The effect is surprisingly stimulating and a supremely cooling and crushable way to drink your veggies. Swipe right on this peppy refresher from Samir Osman, and prime yourself for a second . . . third . . . and fourth date!

Just like its musical influence, the cocktail Pancho and Lefty (remix) is a memorable study of two sides. In the glass, you’ll find that both teams within Tennessee whiskey—the faint char and sweet—aren’t in a duel, but a dance made even more delicious by another of Samir Osman’s recipes.

He’s turned the volume up on both, with smoked pecan wood coalescing with the spirit’s other wood elements, and bright peach and maple syrup lifting up its notes of vanilla and caramel. In the end, it’s a warming and summery taste—akin to a grilled peach—and an easygoing companion to happily bring back to camp.

Shaker and Spoon May 2021 Spoilers

We have spoilers for the May 2021 Shaker & Spoon box!  It will include:

Finding the right rum for the drink at hand is no small task. For one thing, between blending at different stages of the process and filtering, it is presumptive to assume a direct relationship between the color and the strength of nuanced, aged flavor within the bottle. But this month we’re beaming from the anticipation of playing around with sunshine-ready lightly aged blended rums. Some are clear as day, others eschew filtration for a hazy shade of straw, but they all roll out the welcome mat for lively ingredients and a downright zestful time!

While many of us may be more than a sugarcane stalk’s length from the shore, Rum’s the Word that will give you island-time vibes and plenty of smoothness, sunshine, and sweaty cocktail glasses full of inventive and cooling concoctions. Subscribe now through April 30th to get this box—it’s slated to begin to ship the week of May 3rd.
